Lets say we have an ILS RW02 and the IAF is MERSY intersection. The missed is hold at MERSY. Now lets say you're flying inbound about 10 miles from the airport and ATC does not clear you for the ILS, but instead clears you to MERSY and hold.
I'm wondering if there is a way to load the hold into the GPS so it will sequence through and the GPSS will track it...Basically flying the hold on autopilot. On a missed approach it will sequence into the hold.
I can go direct MERSY no problem. I could also anticipate the ILS, load the approach, then after the last waypoint, add MERSY, then go direct to that waypoint in the flight plan. If I go direct MERSY within the approach, as soon as I cross MERSY it will sequence to the next waypoint in the approach and not execute the hold.
From what I can gather, the best way to do this would be to go direct MERSY, then switch from GPSS to heading, start timing and fly the hold in heading mode. Go out 1 minute, rotate the bug 180, on wings level start timing again...and repeat.
Prepping for my checkride and my CFI keeps tripping up with things that I've never done with the avionics I have. Direct to a published hold is one of them. We have done unpublished holds, in IMC, on the autopilot, which consists of just turning the heading bug at the right time and timing the legs.
I thought there would be a way to go directly to a published hold in a more automated way. I diverted so much attention to trying to figure that out in the air that I busted altitude and heading but a little bit.
