Fuel Cross Feeding?

It appears that my 1962 PA 24 cross feeds fuel from the auxiiliary wing tanks to the main tanks. When I fill the main and aux tanks to the tabs and later return to the aircraft the mains are full to the caps and aux appear to have dropped an inch or two. Is this normal for these tanks?
