Going to start this with the Piper Forum Is Not A FSDO (PFINAFSDO) disclaimer, but wanted to get the opinion of the group at large before I start down a path that I kind of feel is a bit silly, but for family sanity I'd like to explore.

My wife is learning how to fly in our 140, but hates the overhead trim crank. Like, *really* hates the overhead trim crank. I made the mistake of showing her the floor trim in an Archer and it was all over. She had declared that is where she wants the trim to be. I say, that's great, lets buy a new plane. But that is never how these discussions go.

All this being said, our 140 is a late '71. I have access to a '73 that I pull parts from, and sitting in that '73 is a perfectly good "lower style" trim system. I've taken a good look at it and found the guides, runs and clearances all exist in my '71, the only difference is that the trim cables go through the ceiling and not through the wing box.

My gut tells me that since our '71 wasn't certified with the lower style trim we'll be heading down the rabbit hole of major modification and field approval. Luckily we're able to do most of the work ourselves, I guess I'm really just asking: "How stupid am I?" Feel free to rate on a scale of 1-10 or use the appropriate colorful adjective.
