I have a friend that wanted to get back into flying after 30 year, and in the process wanted to buy a plane to learn in and to have to fly 3 to 4 people 300 to 400 mile trips. He liked my Cherokee, and after doing a lot of looking and study, picked an mid 1980's Archer II that was refurbished... It is a great looking aircraft, new paint, new interior, new engine, not new panel...
So he had a CFI fly the plane home with him.. it had 3 hours on it when they picked it up and headed the 8 hours to get back to So Cal. It was a longer time getting home becouse of weather, but overall a very good flight, up until the last 15 minutes. The radios worked, the GPS worked, the autopilot worked...
They had been running rich as part of the break-in of the new engine. I do not have the info s to who built the motor, it is eather a new Lycoming or a re-manufactured by one of the big named motor builders back east... need to get a little more info on that one.
As they were letting down to land, it started running rough. So having been runnign rich, they thought a plug had fouled and so leaned it up and tryed to clear it up.. still running rough, shaking more.. so the CFI called that they had a problem and were cleared for a stright in. after parking it and shutting down, it became apperant what the problem was... bent pushrod...
So, I understand that valves get stuck, and have had bent pushrods in V-8 engines, and VW motors... but never like this... what would cause this much bending of the pushrod??.. The repair shop on the field will be pulling the cylinder tomorrow, and the company that built the motor is standing behind any repair that will be needed.... my friend is just out an airplane until it gets fixed. Thus the reason that I looked for an aircraft with at least 500 hours on it....
I have not said the company that did the work on the aircraft or built the engine as they are standing behind there work and so do not want to bash them...
Any ideas??..
