Once we finish out the adsb install rush right now we are planning a 13,500 installed E5 and trutrak combo. We are finalizing details now and I should have us set up as a vendor shortly and will get all the details posted. I really believe in this combo and have it in my two planes I'm partnered in and we have customers that really love the package as well.

Klr…..

With you on this... and many others...

After a lot of research (since early 2017 and flying the TruTrak since March 2018) I believe the TT<>Aspen E5 is the sweet spot of everything available at this time..

You can SPEND a LOT more, but you cannot GET much more... :)

Agreed, and it will get even better with the upcoming Aspen update with vertical guidance from the Aspen, plus the reported free update to a true HSI. Then there is a reported $500 unlock coming for oat, true air speed,...

Agreed!

Have the TT and it has exceeded expectations.. Gona sit on our hands for a while and let the TT<>E5 marriage get the bugs worked out, then make the leap... :)

I have an E5 to put in my own possibly over a couple evenings, or over a weekend (don't want to take shop time away from customer work) and will wire the interface from the Aspen to the TT and send the TT out for the update. The upcoming update from Aspen is supposed to be just a software update on it and should not require the TT to have any more updates. I was going to wait, but my AI is about ready to go out and I don't want to spend any more money on legacy stuff. It takes till the end of the runup to erect and I've seen it list a little on a longer flight. We don't get a lot of IMC here in Reno, NV that you would want to fly in, but this is the time of year that we do get some and I really don't want to be relying on that weak AI.

Hi Klr.....

I would like to follow you closely with this, as we hoping to do most of the work with AME oversight and send it to our Avionics AMO for final setup and calibration .

Any info, pictures or related snags would be most helpful to myself and many others planning this combination.

Cheers and thanks!

Glad I'm still in wait-and-see mode. I am replacing my attitude gyro today with another vaccum unit. I should have a year to decide.

The Aspen still seems like a good option but I wouldn't consider it unless I have a good digital backup. AV-30 would fulfill that need for me.

Hi Rick!

We plan on moving the Vac AI down to the TC hole and keeping the vacuum system until it becomes trouble. (redundant system to electrical) .

What are your thoughts around this?

Just twigged on your words.. "couple of evenings" "weekend" etc.

What is your expectation on install time for the E5? Some quotes I am getting are as much as 40 - 50 hours.. ??

I have studied the manual, and I am no stranger to spending hours resting (?) my head on the rudder pedals. But NOT a pro… I have considerable experience in wiring and making connections etc., have made a living in the electronics industry, but NOT avionics)

Once the seats are out and the overlay is off, I can have an instrument out in my hand it 10 minutes or less unless I have to fight with hoses (grrr) . I have mentally gone through the steps, added 50% to the (my) estimated time and can't get anywhere to 50 hours INCLUDING fabing a doubler for the RMS.

We installed an engine monitor in 35 hours.. with a LOT more wiring and hoses than an Aspen has ever seen... ..

(?)

(Cappy bows to your considerable experience and expertise and with the understanding that *S%&$ happens to extend the time significantly) :)

Your thoughts would be very welcome. :)

Will do, I will make sure to post up any snags and issues and I can post up my drawings of the electrical wiring for this setup with it's selectable Navigator/Aspen switch and the few splices that have to be made to run a few of the 429 connections to two different locations. It isn't a difficult wiring job at all, but really isn't laid out in a good format in any manuals in my opinion.

The AV-30 will be a GREAT unit once it is available with all of the options they are hoping to have available to us if they can get it all approved. For me the IFD550 3D SYN VIS is my backup since it is a certified AHRS.
