Handling Transportation While Traveling

I am in the process of purchasing a Cherokee 140 for doing some East Coast traveling. I am planning on flying in to many small airports. I was wondering other than taxi or rental car are there any other ideas for handling transportation to and from the small airports. Many areas don't have taxis or public transportation. I know rental cars are an option, but are they always easy to get, even at a rural airport? How do you all get around while traveling. Any creative solutions would be appreciated?
