This was on the way to Winnipeg, from Green Bay, after my Osh visit. There was some serious weather in the KMSP area, and some in the KDLH area, I went inbetween. This was not a tactical zig-zag, but larger scale planning.

I have a Stratux (you build it) on-board, that I play with when in the US. The weather is not bad and free, but in my view not as good as XM. ADS-B will show Nexrad into Canada, but nil metars and tafs for Cdn airports.

Just took some pics of the units while in flight. Similar view and timeframe, on the left the 796 with XM (track up mode), and on the right, taken just a little earlier, of my Samsung Tab S2 tablet running Fltplan.com, but in north up view. I also use iFly on my tablet.

The ADS-B display is four color only, and tends to visually overstate the severity of the weather. What really aided me navigating through this weather was my Stormscope (WX500), as it revealed very little convection and discharges, in real time, on my ASPEN & IFD. That complements and validates my impression from the animated and more detailed, but delayed view of the Nexrad. I was in the muck for quite a while, but had only occasional light chop and precip. It was a non-event.
