So right now I've got a mini trip on the radar screen for the middle of July. My wife and I, along with another couple, are planning to fly down to the gulf shores area (2.5 hour flight) and stay for a few days. Unlike a ground trip where you can make concrete plans months in advance this is a little different in that I really can't say for 100% certainty that we can make the trip until a few days before (even then it's checking till departure time).
Anyway, my question is how do you all "plan" for such a trip? Do you wait till the last few days to find a place to stay or book early and roll the dice? I know there is "travel insurance" but I haven't checked if it covers GA "no go" decisions.
It's going to be the middle of July so honestly it would really surprise me if the weather kept us from traveling. We might have to leave earlier or later but the probability of a 3 day stationary front keeping us grounded is very low. Oh, and it's a 10 hour drive in the suburban so I honestly doubt we'd make the trip at all if weather prohibited flying. Using 2 of the 4 days off to travel isn't all that appealing.
and btw I'm working on my IFR rating which will help in the long run... but it won't be done by next month!
The same questions apply for rental cars and such.
Thanks for any advice.
