Anyone have a service manual for King KY-197's?

I'm losing contact with ATC on a regular basis when getting at the edge of their range (typically around 40 miles) and I can hear them fine if I pull the volume knob to cancel squelch, but I don't like listening to squelch for 5-10 minutes while waiting for a hand-off.

It seems like one of my radios is better than the other at picking up ATC at a distance, but the difference is maybe 5-10 miles better at best.

There's two pots on the board of the KY-197 and I know one is for the feedback of your own voice when transmitting, but I don't know what the other one is for (and which is which)

I'm not sure these can be adjusted in that way anyway, and I may need an avionics tech to look at them, or inspect wiring, but I'm looking for feedback first.
