Hey everyone,

I have a buddy that asked me to post this question to the board for him. He checks into the forum from time to time... but since I'm on here more often he asked me to post the question.

His Saratoga has been in for annual this week. The mechanic found a rather scary looking crack in the engine mount cage. It was in the lower left side of the mount. Basically, the mechanic said he has to remove the entire engine, remove the mount, send it off to Minnesota to get welded/repaired, and then reinstall everything. Looking at roughly $7000 repair (removal of engine and cage, shipping of cage, cage repair, and reinstallation of cage and engine).

His plane is an '81 Saratoga, very well kept, probably has around 1200 hours on the engine, and I'd guess around 5000 hours airframe. He has spared no expense on this plane and flies it pretty often. Obviously this was a pretty serious shock to him.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of anything like this? What could cause something like this??

Pics attached.
