New panel or new engine

Short of finding a completely restored airplane and paying all the money, what's your choice? Assuming clean airframe with good P&I, would you rather buy something with a new or very low time engine with recent overhaul or something with modern avionics, autopilot, etc?

Having done a complete panel overhaul, my preference would be to buy the avionics up front and overhaul the engine.
