This changes a lot for me. The GDL 51 is a new, US $649 portable XM weather and audio receiver that can run on battery for 7 hours or plug into the cigar lighter (etc). There's also a remote version that can be wired into the plane's electrical system and hidden out of sight, but I'm not sure if it would need an external antenna.

This uses the new SiriusXM services/frequencies, unlike the clunky old 2-piece Baron XM systems, which had previously been my only option with an Android tablet.
The downside is that it works only with Brand G, but since I'll be using Garmin Pilot anyway, no harm.
