How hard is it getting an instrument rating in a GPS equipped aircraft!

FAA still only requires three specific approaches to earn an Instrument rating. ILS, LOC and VOR. Aircraft equipped with GPS and Auto-Pilots can be a handful.

It is an interesting topic since no two GPS systems operate the same. I have to say teaching using NAV/COM systems were easier since everyone operated the same…..

I-pads were a nice addition to the cockpit and literally eliminated paper charts…..

I found students hand flying Cirrus type aircraft had a harder time programming the radios ……taking clearances and reprogramming the GPS…

Interesting problems
