Door latch question

My 1976 Warrior has a lever type latch. I have noticed older Arrows have smaller latch reminiscent of a Cessna slam latch. The lever latch on my Warrior strikes me as more substantial. What was the reason for the change. Anyone have an experience with older style latch. I think that this is a minor issue in my plane search, but I would like to know.
