I have a standard, old panel. My Six has the Autocontrol III, dual digital navcoms, VORs with GS. The newest thing I have as a PS Engineering 8000BT. I'm good for IFR. I don't have a GTN/GNS nor ADS-B. I use Garmin Pilot on a Nexus 7 tablet.

I can have a GDL 84 installed for a little over $4,000. That makes me ADS-B compliant. And, it links to my tablet via wifi providing traffic and weather for Garmin Pilot.

So, I must be missing something because everyone's default seems to be that you need an IFD 540 or a GTN 650/750. Why are people spending so much more money to have these things panel mounted? I have my tablet on a yoke mount and I can see it better than panel mounted units. The only benefit to installing a panel mount GTN that I'm aware of is the ILS approach. That's just not worth much to me.
