Transponder won't show Altitude Mode C in air - but tests correct on ground!

Good old King KT -76 transponder. Darn thing was tested last year, and supposedly fine. When I fly into Class C, the controller tells me that I am not showing Mode C. I reset, etc and still no squawking altitude.

Avionics man tests on the ground. He says transponder tests OK -may be the couplings or connections? He undoes them and rehooks them. I go back to Class Charlie. "Didn't we tell you last time to get that transponder fixed? What kind of pilot are you?" (Is how I interpreted it when they put me in a holding pattern for 15 minutes).

So despite testing OK, in flight it STILL does NOT show altitude. They test it again at the maintenance barn. Shows fine. . . . Of course!

A new avionics man at the facility later says the transponder box probably needs to be rebuilt. Well, imagine that. More money on a junky old unit. (Reminds me of what my wife said.) :p
I'm wondering does any of this make sense? What is likely the problem? Or do I need to just bite the bullet and think about a new transponder. I mean a NEW one that might combine ADS-B. I saw one called TRIG. Supposed to be a drop-in replacement for the Kt76.

Any help appreciated as always! You guys are very smart on aircraft and I always enjoy reading your analysis and comments.
