I have mistakenly allowed my transponder check to expire. My plane is located at an airport under the Mode C Veil. Does anyone know if I can legally fly the plane to another airport to get the check done? Or do I have to contact someone at the FAA for permission?

I thought the shop would do it as part of the annual inspection, but they can't.

Thanks
