I was out practicing my commercial maneuvers with my brother yesterday about 10 miles from home. During lazy 8s she coughed more than normal, and I suddenly could smell burning oil. She then started to spew oil all over the windshield, slowly for about 5 seconds then started gushing. Ive had this happen to a prop seal before, but this was lot of oil and it was on the sides and wings as well so I knew something bad was coming. i asked my brother to stare at the oil temp and pressure and I called my tower. She asked if it was an emergency and I said no, id be able to make 13 while I was westbound. She put me number 2 behind a twin cessna, left downwind and I was ok with that. I dialed up my gps for 13 quick like and about that time my brother said we had no oil pressure. I informed tower we needed 26 and she cleared all actives for me. I had to do s turns to find 26 out my sides, as It doesnt have an ils, and my 89b, forget about that for being fast. I landed using my night technique(all the while thinking of the archer thread!:)), looking straight out the sides and up as much as possible. It worked out fine and was a nice landing with a firetruck waiting for me. I shut her down immediately and let the fbo tow me to my spot. I immediately drained my oil to check if anything was left and there was almost 2.5 qts thank goodness.

Ironically I had been practicing about 20 motor outs the last couple days, and am fairly comfortable with the plane so it played out as it should. But, another 20 seconds and we would have been in a field, with no fwd landing vision. I called tower to thank them on the way home. She is a nice lady I know and said, when asked if it was an emergency and I said we should be fine she looked through binoculars and saw we were trailing black smoke so she declared one right off for us.

I didnt think much of it at the time, but last night I thanked my lucky stars cause we were going to take it for a night flight out of town the previous night with my kids and wife.

Time for motor options, id prefer to be far on the good side of tbo from now on. :) I see a few 320 e2as that have little to half time out of cherokees for around 7-9k with all accessories. Is this wise if I pick from a good source? I see that a rebuild may run around 20k possibly, so id rather sell it as is before spending my mooney fund on it. Any suggestions?

Im going to the airport now to get the filter, check the screen and see when they can get it in the shop to hopefully find its a prop seal. :D

I shall report my findings.
