Planning on a VFR trip from Wisconsin to the Smokey Mountains in a couple of weeks with my wife & 5 year old. Having never flown out that way I'm posting here to get any tips/advice about the route, airport (KGKT, Pigeon Forge), or anything to be aware off. My route is pretty much direct except some minor adjustments to avoid a couple of MOAs on the way down and will be stopping half way for lunch/bathroom/fuel. In our Dakota we could be looking at 3.5 hours unless winds work against us. This will also be the longest trip w/ our 5 year old so any tips on that are also welcome!

I'm wondering/considering if flying over O'Hare Bravo at 11,500 (eastbound) is a wise choice vs. the VFR route along the shore at 2500' and then climb up to 9500 or so for the rest of the flight.
