In anticipation of pulling the fuel selector valve for repair, I was burning tanks low on fuel on a recent trip. I planned to run a tip tank dry up at 9,500 within gliding distance of an airport. It happened a little sooner than I planned since I didn't have a precise measurement of how much was left in the tip tank. For the first ever I convinced my wife to take the controls for a minute and feel how the airplane is controlled. Of course about 15 seconds after she grabs the yoke the engine loses power! I switched the selector to the full main tank and power was restored instantly. It was a total non-event..but not for her! I think I'm going to have a hard time convincing her to do that again. Haha.
