PA-28-236 Mixture Lock

Our Dakota seems to have the mixture lock feature BUT it appears prior owner disabled it in some way as there's no "tab" to push although I see the slit for it and the mixture moves freely. Wondering if this is something worth replacing/fixing or if those of you with the same feature find it more of an annoyance to have to push that tab when reducing mixture below the 50% mark?
