I bought my current plane just over a year ago, condition overall was pretty good, the panel was sparse though. It had one KX-170, a CDI, & a transponder. The rest was inop or outdated(ADF & Loran). I soon went out & bought a Garmin 696, which I like very much, XM weather too.

Here I am a year later & I get the feeling my one radio is marginal, more evaluation required(I do have a spare kx-175B I could slide in). Of late I am wanting to get the plane legal for IFR flight, safe too. I don't need to deal with 200 & 1/2, just get through layers & towards non-precision minimums.

Even though I like my 696, I feel I should of went with the 430w or so from the get-go. I have more than one need to fill. Though I've tried to remain satisfied with my spartan panel I'm wanting a little more. I see a 430w is mentioned often, 10k or so installed. It sounded like a lot a year ago, less so if the cost of the 696 was deducted. My recent thought was to limp along with my current set-up, with a better radio & maybe an additional attitude gyro. If I keep that up I get closer to that $10k without a 430w to show for it.

Maybe I'll have a light conversation with the local shop, just wondering.
