Finally got to fly the 235 yesterday, first time this year, what a crummy winter this has been. As I was taxiing out, I noticed the compass was not working, and was kind of at an angle. Thought it was strange since it worked fine last fall, but I was staying in the pattern for touch and go's only, so chalked it up to the really nasty winter. After a few of touch and gos, put the plane away and planned to call the mechanic this morning to get it in for the compass problem.
As I was falling asleep last night, it occurred to me what the problem was. I'd put all the electronics back in the plane, and I'd put the XM antenna (with its giant magnet) for the Garmin 396 on the pilot side of the dash instead of the passenger side. This put it about 8 inches directly above the compass. Why does this thought come as I'm falling asleep instead of when I'm flying???? Went out to the hangar first thing this morning, moved the antenna to the passenger side, and tada! the compass is perfectly fine.
At least I figured it out before I took it to the mechanic......
