My Cherokee 140 has the KT-78 transponder. A local reliable avionics shop performed the VFR check (pitot/static/xpndr) this past January. The faceplate actually says KT-76 but they confirmed it was a -78, fwiw. The past few months the "lamp" has not been blinking, or very sporadically (less than once per minute, even at altitude)....actually I have not seen it recently at all (very few night flights too but still haven't then). Do these lights 'burn' out? The 4 digits ARE backlit, so it is getting power. I make very few flight-following flights so haven't confirmed with ATC on proper function. Is there any other way to test actual Mode A/C output, or is this common?
