I have infected my grandson with the aviation "bug" and he's taking lessons with an eye to getting a commercial license and a pilot career. But it's not clear whether there will be a job for him when he gets there in ten years.

OTOH, autopilots may be great but in icing conditions the POH says "turn it off". In turbulence...turn it off. With runaway trim...turn it off. Engine failure...turn it off.

Perhaps AI will advance to the point of automation being able to handle the anomalous events. Right now the best AI has the capability of a bright 6 year-old kid.
