I was on an instrument flight plan en route to KCOU. Solid VMC with a safety pilot. I requested vectors for GPS RWY 31. Instead of vectors he cleared me to AJQUR. So I selected the GPS 31 approach on my Garmin 430, except there was no AJQUR IAF option. (I later realized AJQUR is not marked as an IAF). This left us no option but to select "vectors", which at least got us lateral guidance. Problem is with vectors selected you get no waypoints until the FAF. I had no idea where the BODCU step down was. If I had been alone in IMC this could have been a problem.

I conclude that the controller erred in clearing me to a waypoint on the approach that isn't an IAF. I probably should have declined the clearance and asked for either vectors or STITH.

Comments welcome.
