You guys may already know this, but new to me. Anyone with a 296/396/496, there is an internal battery soldered on a circuit board that gets recharged only when the unit is plugged in to external power and the unit is turned ON. If this battery goes dead you may experience the unit not being able to pickup satellites because it has forgotten its current location.

Take the unit home and plug in the wall, turn on and let it sit for a couple of days and the unit will begin to work again. If the battery is totally dead and you are good in soldering, it will cost about $18, or send it to Garmin for $350.
