I'm planning an upgrade for my wife's C172. It is a pretty basic IFR plane. Rock solid but no glass. It has the original Cessna CDI's. GS nav1 and loc nav2. Dual digital nav/coms. Basic six pack and a GX55. Already has ADSb out (GDL 82).

I want to replace the GX55 with a GPS 175 so we can fly RNAV approaches. The best I can determine at this point is that I will need to replace my top CDI with a GI 106B. On that premise, I figured it would be worth a little extra $ to just put in a G5 HSI instead of a GI 106B. So far, what I'm seeing seems to indicate the G5 can't be my primary GS (legally) unless I have the GI 106B as a backup. Or, maybe it can't be anything but a backup for GS legally. I don't know. Anyone with a little knowledge in this area? I would be rather grateful for any information and/or recommendations.
