Imagine this scenario: You decide to have both your AI and your DG overhauled. But, to get them pulled from the panel, you have to fly to an outstation and return to home base with two holes in the panel.

Per 91.205(b), you do not need these two to fly day VFR. My compass works fine.

So in this scenario, how could this be done? There is no way to "turn off" the vacuum pump, is there? How would things need to be configured under there to allow the airplane to fly back to home base, then back to the outstation without those two instruments installed and without burning up the pump or causing any damage?
