New pilot applicants need to learn dead reckoning and pilotage before going to electronic navigation like a nice I-Pad and ForeFlight . Some push backing wanting to know why do they have to learn all that old stuff!!

The FAA requires a PPL applicant to demonstrate dead reckoning navigation and present a navigation log. It need to have accurate fuel burns, check points and ETE along with check points....The DPE test the applicant and he must perform it correctly or else!

I love the I-Pad but a through understanding of dead reckoning and pilotage makes a better pilot. And what I'd the battery fails ?
