Cost of 3rd class medical exam

I noticed that several posters have stated that they only spend between $75 to $100 for a medical.
My local AME charges $300 for a medical. As far as I know I don't get anything special for that price versus a cheap medical. I realize flying is expensive but I hate throwing money away when there is a better deal.
Any of these cheap medical's available in the midwest. FYI I am in Iowa.
