Piper Comanches have a rare occurrence of cracking trunnions, probably due to casting voids. We used to send them to S and B Industries in Salt Lake City but the partners grew old, and that was the end of S and B.
We persuaded K and K Welding in Wisconsin to get an approved repair procedure for cold welding, an excellent process, but they chose to discontinue doing the trunnion weld repairs. They still do the nose trunnion but have chosen to discontinue the main trunnions.
Does anyone here have knowledge of a weld shop that would like to obtain an FAA approval and do weld repairs of trunnions?
There is a new trunnion for Comanches out of Australia at quite a premium cost. We would like to get the weld repair program back together if anyone can do it.
