A few days ago a Cherokee went down while in the pattern to land. Evidently the pilot took off to do a local post maintenance check flight. This was on or about dec 2. The weather was marginal VFR right around dusk. It appeared that he was turning on a base leg to land and lost control.

My CFI was on the CAP search team that found the plane. They think with the marginal weather and dwindling light, he flew into IMC and lost control. The pilot was not instrument rated. The plane was completely destroyed. My CFI said it appeard to be a PA-28 235.

I haven't seen this on the news yet. Just passing on what I was told by the local CAP which bases at our airport.
