Can a Garmin G5 substitute for a GI-106A/B now?

I'd be grateful for help with 3 questions:

1. Does last week's announcement that the Garmin G5 in HSI mode can now be used as the primary CDI for GPS/VOR navigation mean that I could install a G5 instead of a GI-106 for use with a Garmin GPS?

2. Does "primary" also mean that it would be allowed to provide course information to my existing STEC-20 autopilot?

3. Is this approval automatically valid in Canada, given that it's US hardware in a plane with a US type certificate?

Thanks for your thoughts,
