I have a buddy that has offered to give me an electronic AI. I would like to install it as a backup AI in my panel. I have a slot for it (where the ADF used to be). I asked my mechanic and he said that it would require a field approval. Does this sound right since it is a backup instrument? I would really like to have a backup but I don't think that I want to go through the hassle of a field approval for it though. I am not instrument rated yet but I plan on getting it next year.
