I have a 78 Archer II that as far as I know was never equipped with an autopilot. I'm getting close to starting instrument training and I'd really like one for that and it wouldn't be bad for VFR cross country either.

The cheapest option I'm aware of is the Stec 20 system and the guy I go to for avionics estimated it would cost nearly $10k to get it installed. For that kind of money I'm leaning towards just continuing to hand-fly everywhere.

Anyone know of another route that's less costly? I've got no problem with used/salvage/refurb stuff if I can get it.
