I was reading elsewhere that transponders like the GTX-3x5 series don't let you run in privacy mode (since they are 1090 only and not UAT). Reviewing 14CFR91.225, the only time I would need ADS-B is to get in and out of my home airport due to class B proximity. Further, ADS-B requirements are only defined by airspace, not by the flight rules (e.g.. you don't need ADS-B out for IFR ops).

That got me thinking. If you have the space, why not keep the old transponder? Have 2 separate redundant systems that are not interconnected. Switch off the ADS-B and enable the old mode-c once you're out of the bravo terminal area. Does anyone know if there would be STC limitations other hurdles getting the equipment installed like that? Maybe put a switch on the transponders power line so that only one can be active at once...
