The other thread, "New 406 ELT," has me thinking about my forced landing checklist. I've never seen such a list that includes "Activate ELT" (if you have a panel-mounted switch). But, why wouldn't you do so? Even if you walk away and there are witnesses there to retrieve you, that seems preferrable to taking the chance that the ELT will activate properly in the event of a hard/crash landing -- which, experience teaches, is by no means certain. I also use a Spot and have felt I should activate its emergency message feature for the same reason.

Thoughts?
