I'm now a pp so will be venturing past 25 miles. During my training I wasn't worried about losing gps, I could find my way home from anywhere in my stomping grounds. I'm trying to be as safe as possible. I've added thermal underwear, a folding saw, water, food, etc. to my ditch bag. I've got 2 vor's but a inop dme (which I will have looked at). I've got a panel mounted Garmin 696. I plan to buy a Yaesu FTA-750L which will backup my 2 com's and my gps in the event of an electrical failure.
My question is what things can cause me to suddenly lose power to my panel/electronics? Not the alternator, I could fly on battery power long enough to find an airport. Something could short and blow a fuse I'm sure. Main sw could go bad. What else?
Who has suddenly lost all power to their panel? How common is that? My 696 battery pack is dead and only works when plugged into cig lighter. Should I replace the battery pack so it will keep operating in the event of electrical failure or is that so unlikely that I'd be fine with the Yaesu? The battery pack is not cheap but I am more than willing to buy one for added safety if y'all think it's wise to.
