3500 hour 1978 archer in for annual, could not find any entry for the stab cable inspection so we cleaned them up, looked close and found no pitting or any signs of corrosion. Put it all back together once again no issues.
Go to change the strobe box out and the technician leans on the stab cable and it broke! there was no sign of external corrosion. what gets me is where it fractured, not in the threaded area. This aircraft had clips for locking devices as a lot of pipers do. Mcfarlane has new cables for 350 bucks for the pair. a very easy change during the annual. I am thinking of bringing all mine back to .040 safety wire as well.
Stay safe guys.
