I'm working hard on learning RNAV IFR procedures ahead of installing my GTN 650 late this summer, and I found this article interesting. It suggests that even when you're being given vectors to final, you shouldn't choose "Vectors to final" in an IFR GPS, but instead load the approach (with the nearest transition) and leave it unactivated (it will activate automatically when you intercept one of the legs):

For those of you who have been flying with a GNS 430 or similar for a while, how well does this match your own experience? It seems to work well in the GTN 650 emulator, but I haven't, obviously, seen what happens in real life.

(Also, noted that the newer GTN Garmin software leaves all waypoints in the final approach course available with "Vectors to final", so the problem isn't as bad as it used to be.)

Thanks, David
