I'm in the process of a panel upgrade to my Cherokee 140. Going all glass (Sounds crazy on a 140, doesn't it). I want to remove the vacuum system during the upgrade, and want to keep the cost somewhat in check.

I'd like to hear from those who have already accomplished a vacuum system removal, and to find out what panel equipment was installed to accomplish this.

I already have an Aspen PFD Pro, and purchased a second PFD Pro and an MFD when they were offered at a reduced price this spring to current Pro owners.

Here is my dilemma. The second pro cannot be used as a standby AI (secondary attitude source) as required for IFR flight.

I would prefer a Garmin G5 to serve this purpose, (cost and weight considerations). My avionics shop says it is STC'd as a primary only, and is a no go as the Standby. The shop says the FSDO wont do a field approval on it. I've already heard from one owner who has a G5 approved and installed in a PA-32 in the standby capacity. My shop is aware of this, but is dealing with a different FSDO.

This leaves me considering one of the following:

  • Sandia Quattro
    L3 Genesis

If anyone has any experience or good input with this subject, I'd welcome your thoughts.
