I'm looking into having a modest avionics upgrade done, and have communicated with two shops thus far. They both told me that the uAvionix AV-30s that I'm considering to replace vacuum system (AI & DG) are NOT approved for IFR navigation, and are not approved for installation with an autopilot. Both shops recommended Garmin products, at greater expense.
I contacted uAvionix support, and received the following response to my questions:
1. The AV-30s are approved for primary navigation. This means that the AV-30-C can fulfill 91.205 for both AI and DG.
2. They do not work with any autopilot systems. We hope to add Trutrak, trio, and Stec in the future. I am not sure if we will be adding Century autopilots.
3. We hope to have the drift issue solved this summer.
4. We don't normally share labor costs of installation. I do know that the majority of the installation will be for the vacuum system. You will also have to consider that you will need a pitot / static test which usually have their standard cost at most shops. The actual installation shouldn't take long as long as no rework of the circuit breaker panel is needed which can also take extra time. If you hook OAT or/and GPS then there will be extra cost to that too.
Thank you,

Seeking more clarity with respect to #1, I reached out to my CFII friend, who confirmed that the AV-30s ARE legal for IFR flight, in addition to VFR.
I thought others would like to know this.
