My hot start procedure on our O-540 is no primes at all. I leave the mixture closed, throttle closed, charge the fuel system with the electric pump and usually shut it back off (but I don't think it matters to leave on or shut off) then crank and start opening the mixture and it usually fires within a blade or two at a nice low rpm. Then I adjust the throttle to 1000 rpm.

I can't remember the last time I did a lunch stop, but did a lot of one hour stops a few years ago when flying across Canada. I never remember hard starting using this process.

Cold, I usually do 4-6 primes during the pre-flight, rather than the pre-start procedure, so the fuel has time to evaporate in the manifold.
