We all know TAS and range will increase at the same power setting with altitude, nothing new there. However, what isn't quite so obvious, at least not to me, is why the two are not more closely related. For example, according to the charts in the POH for a constant power setting of 55% the Lance has an increase in TAS of 19% from SL to about 14K, while the range only increases by 5%. What gives? That seem counter intuitive at best.

At first I thought it was perhaps just an anomaly in the PA32R POH, so I looked at a few others that were close at hand and found similar results: PA30 +13% TAS/+7% range, PA60 24%/14%, Beech C24R 7%/3%. Remember these are all at the same power setting.

OK smart people, what the heck??
