I broke the shear pin on my sky-tec starter 5 or 6 hours ago. Skytec told me it was because my timing was off. My mechanic checked the timing and it was fine. I replaced the shear pin and it was good for another 4 hours, and then the shear pin broke again. Sky-tec told me it was probably because my battery was low on charge or my wiring is high resistance which caused the starter to be weak so the engine rebounded at the compression stroke breaking the shear pin ... or the starter was simply worn out. The starter has around 500 hours on it. Occasionally, the starter would spin but not engage for one or two starter button pushes ... but then it would always start ... until the shear pin broke.
Is the starter simply worn out? Or do I have an electrical problem that is causing starter failures? The skytek representative mentioned a Piper service bulletin regarding the replacement o aluminum wires to the ground and the starter ... but I could not find it for the Cherokee 180. The current starter lasted almost 500 hours.
Any insights?
