I was a part 61 guy and the instructors in the late 1970's just told us the first 20 degrees added lift and the second 20 added drag.


The school I was in C172 G's I's L's M's you never knew what plane you were flying that day. They were mostly all 150 or 160HP. I do know the 172RG call for no flaps on short field.


Seems like this should have been a teaching moment for the DE instead of making the kid feel bad.
