Does anyone know if I can rely on the fuel gauge readings in my 2003 Saratoga II HP? I was taught to visually verify the fuel level by peering inside the tank. But on the Saratoga, this doesn’t seem possible. I lose site of the fuel at around 35 gallons. The fuel ends up too far down the wing. All I see is what looks like a rubber lining. There’s no tabs, or any other reference, except the fuel gauge on the wing, and in the cockpit.

They seem fairly accurate. The wing gauges read within 5 gallons of the cockpit gauges. And I filled up the tank to full, and it topped off at the expected amount. Also, it seems to read around what I would expect after each flight.

But, my instructors were adamant - don’t rely on fuel gauges and visually inspect. Is it possible someone came up with working gauges and that thinking is outdated?

Just curious what other folks think.
