Had an alternator fail in my van when on a trip. Because so much stuff is electrical now, I was worried about whether I could make it to a shop before the battery died. Used to be before engine management conputers and fuel injection and electric fuel pumps you could go a lontg time. I have a digital voltmeter so was watching the battery voltage carefully. Stopped to check for simple stuff but left the engine running.
