I have a couple of questions on radio etiquette.

1. Flying an aircraft with a single radio, say I have flight following or I am in controlled airspace. I want to get the ATIS for my destination airport. What is the most proper way to proceed? Call ATC and request a frequency change?

2. Flying with flight following class E airspace. If I am going to change altitude do I request a climb to XXX, or do I just call up and say I am climbing to XXX?
